Speaker Pelosi Calls for an End to Worksite Enforcement

At a press conference on November 5th, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated that she supports an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) worksite enforcement operations, arguing that they have intensified the importance of advancing amnesty legislation. Pelosi asked, "How do we end the ICE raids, have a situation where we can end the ICE raids as we put together comprehensive immigration reform?" A Pelosi spokesperson said the Speaker had long believed that ICE worksite enforcement operations are ineffective and "unnecessarily divide families at the expense of children." The spokesperson also said the Speaker "supports a bipartisan solution that protects our borders, enforces our laws, unites families and creates a path to legalization."

The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Georgians
Georgia has a fast growing illegal alien population estimated at about 495,000 persons, and the fiscal burden on Georgians resulting from public services used by that population are similarly growing rapidly. FAIR estimates that the annual fiscal burden on Georgia taxpayers from illegal immigration is more than $1.6 billion. That equates to an annual cost of about $523 per native-born headed household. This rapid rise in Georgia’s illegal alien population has prompted the state legislature to take action to discourage illegal immigrant settlement in the state, but it remains to be seen to what extent the state’s action when fully implemented will reverse the growth trend.

On the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, this report finds that while some progress has been achieved in closing the vulnerabilities exploited by the 9/11 attackers, several loopholes still remain.
